ABOUT US
It all began in the bustling streets of Chinatown, New York City, where the aroma of steamed dumplings first drifted from the small kitchen of Joe’s Shanghai. Founded in 1995 by Chef Kiu Sang “Joe” Si and Barbara Matsumura, the restaurant started with one simple dream — to share the rich, comforting flavors of Shanghainese home cooking with New Yorkers. From that humble corner on Bowery, Joe’s Shanghai quickly became a landmark, drawing curious diners and loyal patrons with its signature soup dumplings — tender, hand-pleated pockets filled with savory broth and love.

As word spread, so did the legend of the “soup dumpling experience.” Tables filled with families, travelers, and food lovers from around the world, all leaning in over steaming baskets, learning to master the art of biting just right to savor every drop of broth. Each dumpling carried the story of Shanghai’s traditions, reimagined through Joe’s passion and New York’s melting-pot spirit.

Today, Joe’s Shanghai at 46 Bowery continues to serve more than just food — it serves a legacy. Every bowl of noodles, every dumpling, and every smile shared across the table tells a story that began three decades ago. Step inside, and you’re not just dining — you’re becoming part of a New York story that’s still being written, one bamboo steamer at a time.
